Dealing with Suicidal Thoughts

 

Many people with severe mental illness struggle with suicidal thoughts. Many who have been successful in the attempt on their life, were intoxicated or had alcohol and/or street drugs in their system. Others however, were not intoxicated at the time of their passing. So first of all, depression does not go too well with alcohol and drugs. Secondly, let's make it very clear, there’s a difference between having passive suicidal thoughts and having an urgent plan to end your life. The goal is to always be safe and sometimes that includes going to the ER and even a possible stay at the hospital, in the hospital you're safe and the staff may watch over you for a few days. If you’re currently thinking about suicide; call a suicide crisis hotline in your community. If you have a plan to end your life, call 911 or the emergency number in your country immediately. There are people who care about you, all of us with mental health issues care about you. And always remember. “There are Better Options!”

1) Call Suicide Hotline in your country. Suicide Mental Health

2) Discuss feelings with a therapist and psychiatrist.

3) Be open to make new contracts with family and friends, that you won't hurt yourself.

4) Avoid all street drugs and alcohol. (or very little alcohol)

5) Volunteer in your community and get involved, it's a great feeling.

6) Develop a daily routine and stick to it.

7) Identify feelings or situations that occur before your suicidal feelings get worse.

8) Take medications as prescribed. Speak to a psychiatrist if medicine not working or having serious issues.

 

A few thoughts that you can remind yourself of, whenever you’re feeling suicidal:

     I’ve gotten through this before; I can get through it again.
     I can hold out and this will pass.
     I can call and talk to someone about this.
     I need to relax and get a new perspective.
     I have too much to live for.
     I believe death is never a solution.
     I just have to think positive.
     I’m having a bad day, time to use my coping skills.
     There are BETTER OPTIONS!

Don’t imagine negative thoughts, they only bring you down, further down than you currently are. Statements such as, “I screw up everything” or "My family and friends don't need me”. Negative thoughts like these and many more will only strengthen your depression and anxiety.
